Transcribed papers, 1861-1862, 1866-1893 of Ambrosio Jose Gonzales and family, including son Narciso G. Gonzales, editor of "The State" newspaper; places represented include Charleston, Columbia, and elsewhere in South Carolina; New York City; Baltimore; Cuba; and elsewhere; collection includes several letters dating to 1862, but majority of papers discuss news of family and business, ca. 1866-1893. In addition to correspondence, volume includes A.J. Gonzales' address book, and several legal documents re property called Social Hall plantation on Chehaw River in Colleton County, S.C., including unsigned draft of labor contract [1872?] by Ambrosio Gonzales agreeing to lease property to Jose Ramon Cucalon, with plat of property and comparison of land's fertility with sites elsewhere in U.S. and Europe; deed, 29 May 1886, conveying Social Hall plantation land, "formerly ... the estate of William Elliott," from Ambrosio Jose Gonzales to Ambrose E. Gonzales.
